Double shoulder bag made by Shonan Leather Co., Ltd.

Shonan Leather Company is one of the few companies in Japan that uses tannin tanning in pits.

The leather is thick and tightly tanned, so it can be used as a shoulder bag, shoulder strap, or handle.

Shownan Leather Industry, located in the Gochaku area of Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, is one of only a few tanneries left in Japan that still uses pit tanning.

They mainly produce full-tanned leather, for everything from shoe soles to bags and accessories.

Shonan Leather uses a proprietary blend of original oils, which gives the thick tanned leather a supple softness and firmness.

Pit tanning is a tanning method in which vegetable tanning agents are stored in a tank dug into the ground and leather is soaked in it for about three weeks.

This method puts less strain on the leather and allows the tannin to slowly penetrate deep into the fibers over time, resulting in a strong, heavy-duty tanned leather.

The only tanneries in Japan that carry out large-scale pit tanning are Showan Leather Industry, Tochigi Leather Co., Ltd., Shinki Leather Co., Ltd., and Sanyo Co., Ltd.

*This is a round dyeing process, not a core dyeing process. (The cross section is ecru.)

*Since no finishing process or processing to hide scratches is done after tanning, scars and natural marks will be visible.
